This extremely rare coloured painting was sold by Anthony d’Offay in 1982 – with the provenance of the artist’s family.
The work was no doubt made to amuse the children at Christmas. Gill would have projected the image onto a wall using a type of lantern projector. The process would have reversed the image, hence the backwards writing.
